AS 91431 Issue:
"The Hauraki Gulf – an ecosystem under pressure."
The Hauraki Gulf is a valuable resource not just to the residents who live near it but is also important to more than just North Island.
From an environmental perspective:
-The production of fish and shellfish as the Gulf’s sea grass beds provide environments for many of our popular fish stocks to reproduce.
-Mangrove forests provide protection to the coastline from wave erosion
-Mussels provide food. Like many other species of shellfish they also provide a water filtering service, reducing nutrient pollution by consuming phytoplankton that is rich in phosphorus and nitrogen.
From a cultural perspective:
-providing a place and space where people can recognise and express their cultural heritage
-where they carry out recreational and leisure activities.
The Hauraki Gulf is an environment increasingly under threat from increasing use.
What can we do about it? What actions will solve the issue?
An interesting topic looking at the sustainability of the Hauraki Gulf and its current uses : fishing, recreation, urban development, industry.
